How Do We See Color?
نویسندگان
چکیده
WHAT IS COLOR GOOD FOR? Although our distant ancestors probably first used color vision to find fruit in trees, it is still useful to us. Even though most of us will never have to defuse a bomb (Figure 1), colors are used to send all sorts of important messages in the modern world. Traffic lights turn from green to red to tell us to stop (Figure 2), warning lights turn orange on the car dashboard and the LED on my phone charger flashes green to let me know I can play Angry Birds again. Color is also beautiful – think how much time we spend admiring the hues in sunsets, art, and landscapes, and how much less-impressive firework displays would look in black and white. So how exactly is the sensation of color produced?

Seeing things differently, as discussed in this paper, is the link between Sufism and art. It is a quality shared by both Sufis and artists. This quality has two dimensions: the dimension of insight and the dimension of actions. With their insights, artists and Sufis see the world differently. They see things that others do not see. They also see things that everybody else sees in different way...

The aim of my argument (1) is to reconceptualise what is now called religious studies as the study of institutionalised values, and the relation between values and the legitimation of power in a specific society. Though I do not talk much about power here, it is always a fundamental issue in the study of specific social groups. The first assumption which I make in this paper is that the way anal...
متن کاملThe visual perception of objective motion and subjective movement.
The perception of motion in the visual field, when recognized as a psychological problem instead of something self-evident, is often taken to present the same kind of problem as the perception of color or of form. Movement is thought to be simply one of the characteristics of an object, and the only question is "how do we see it?" Actually, the problem cuts across many of the unanswered questio...
متن کاملWhy we need to read and understand literature: literariness and Hans Rosling’s Factfulness (2018)
My article addresses the qualities of “good” literature and how an understanding of the nature of literary devices, so-called “literariness”, can enhance the reading experience. Focusing on Hans Rosling’s Factfulness (2018), I discuss some of the most important features of good writing. Six literary devices have been selected for special attention: point of view, tone, amplification, anecdotes,...

What is color? Of course, examples of colorful objects are not hard to come by (Fig. 1 provides numerous examples), so the question itself is slightly puzzling, suggesting that some confusion needs to be cleared up or ignorance enlightened. But how could anyone (who isn't blind or totally lacking in color vision) possibly be confused about what color is? After all, if we learn anything about th...
